Plumbers, fire crews expect thawing pipes to create big problems around Lubbock
As a severe Arctic weather system hovered over Lubbock, dumping snow and freezing the area with sub-zero temperatures, the city s water department personnel worked in shifts to take calls from residents 24/7.
Since Monday, the city s water department received about 600 calls a day from residents reporting water issues ranging from leaks to frozen pipes and lack of service, said Aubrey Spear, the city s water utilities director, on Thursday. Usually, the call volume is much less than that, he said. This will probably continue through next week at least.
Many calls during the first half of the week came from residents reporting that they didn’t have water. City utility workers dispatched to the homes found that, in most cases, the home s water pipes had frozen.
