President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a new Chief of Army Staff following the death of Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru.
Nigeria’s new Army chief is Major General Farouk Yahaya, a former General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter Terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East, codenamed Operation HADIN KAI.
Ibrahim Attahiru died in an air crash on Friday alongside 10 other senior military officers.
A statement signed by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Acting Director Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, said, “The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Mohammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.

Nigeria was yesterday thrown into mourning, when its 21st Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, along with six senior officers and four crew members perished in an air crash in Kaduna.
Attahiru and the others were onboard Nigerian Air Force Kingair 350 from Abuja to Kaduna, ahead of todayâs passing out parade of soldiers from the Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria, when the crash happened amid torrential rainfall.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sadness over the air crash, saying the military officers would not die in vain.
