Senate: Service Wide Vote Biggest Fraud in Nigeria

By Deji Elumoye The Senate on Thursday described the service wide vote in the federal budget domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Finance as the biggest fraud to have happened to Nigeria. This is just as the Acting Auditor General of the Federation, Adolphus Argungu, disclosed that his office had no constitutional power to audit the account of agencies like the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), among others. Speaking at the confirmation hearing of Acting Auditor-General of Federation, Adolphus Aghughu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Matthew Uhroghide, while stressing that service wide fund was the biggest fraud in the country as the annual vote had never been audited stated particularly that in the 2021 budget, the federal government allocated N758 billion for service wide vote.

Public urged to volunteer information to Audit Service

Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, the Acting Auditor-General Mr Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, the Acting Auditor-General, has urged the public to volunteer information on financial malfeasance in public institutions to the office through the “Citizen Eye Application” for prompt follow-up. He said the application would enable citizens to report, directly, any suspected cases of financial infractions, poor service delivery, and other identified acts of corruption in public institutions to the Auditor General’s office. The platform, an initiative of the Ghana Audit Service, was developed under the auspices of the German Development Cooperation. It aimed at enabling and empowering citizens to report or speak out against corruption while protecting the whistle blower’s identity.

The recruitment process, according to the GAC Act requires that an Independent Selection and Recruitment Process shall be set up by the President for the purpose of identifying suitable candidates for the position of Auditor General and (II) membership of the ad hoc committee shall include the incumbent Auditor or Acting Auditor General, Senior representatives of the Civil Service Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, the Liberian Institute of certified Public Accountants the Governance Commission and Civil Society in Good Standing. This is done six months prior to the expiration of the tenure of the current Auditor General.

House Summons Finance Minister, AGF over $36 1m World Bank Loan

Udora Orizu in Abuja The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts has summoned the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed and the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, to appear before it to explain the terms of agreement regarding the multilateral loan of $36.1 million and grant of $1.5 million from world bank and other development partners. Recall that, on November 19, the Hon. Wole Oke-led panel asked the Director General of the Budget Office, Ben Akabueze, to explain why the office of the OAUGF was grossly underfunded. Akabueze had in his response, faulted the notion that the OAuGF was grossly underfunded, saying that the office of the Auditor-General receives substantial resources from development partners, which includes $36.1 million multilateral loan and grant of $1.5 million from the world bank.
