course the 9/11 terrorist attack, hurricane irene last year and then super storm sandy, and we re told by community leaders here, downtown, that about 35% of the businesses do indeed have business interruption insurance, but of those that have it, they re having had a hard time accessing it. the resiliency of the community has been tested like with the 9/11 terrorist attacks and community leaders say they will come back stronger than ever. after 9/11, we at lower manhattan faced a 15 acre hole in the heart of our neighborhood and we did pick up the pieces and rebuild and we ve been down this road before. it s going to take a long time and challenging, but wool rebuild our neighborhood. reporter: some of the residents here, harris, tell us that their landlords are letting them break their leases or offering them rebates, but that s just a case by case basis, back to you. harris: you mentioned business interruption insurance, i bet you there are people tonight writing that down. an
he went from hundred rentals a day to just five. we wish to stay so we don t know yet. our business is based on tourism. it doesn t make sense to hang around for a year making very little. reporter: according to a brokerage, quarter of lower manhattan office space was out you of business because of the storm. 35% of businesses do have business interruption insurance but of those that have it they are having a hard time assessing it. in community ease resilience has been tested before. after 9/11 we faced a 16 acre hole in the heart of our neighborhood and we did rebuild. we have been down this road before. it will take a long time. it will be very challenging but we will rebuild our neighborhood. reporter: some of these
land, dirt that came out of there. and that became battery park. so they had to fill up a 32 acre hole. that s how deep it was. that s what came out of there. that s all infrastructure. there were 26 different agencies. 125 different vendors. so i understand what took ten years. before i let you get out of here, i m to talk a little bit about the book as well. tell us about that. there s a book called art for heart. there was a program for children who lost parents after 9/11 to come together in community centers and paint as a part of their therapy. paint something to their lost loved one. something to dedicate. now we ve made a book including those pictures and the picture from the new york child studies center, new york kids about their feelings about nene. it s really interesting because it s all about hope. and they re absolutely stunning. so we brought it together in a book to benefit the memorial. how can folks get ahold of that book? they go on to our website for
