for joining me this evening. the last time the republicans had a contested presidential primary was the year 2016. and no it seemed sort of impossible to imagine now the party was kind of divided about trump s victory all the way to the convention floor, and you saw that no more clearly than when senator ted cruz went to the podium in a prime time speaking slot, i might add, and refused to mention trump s name during his convention speech. and boy, oh, boy did people notice. if you love our country and love your children as much as i know that you do, stand and speak and vote your conscience. vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom. god bless each and every one of you, and god bless the united states of america. prior to that moment, before all those just deafening boos, ted cruz and donald trump had been going at each other for months. relations between these two men were not good. trump regularly went after ted cruz s family during
really addressed what comes next. one thing we know is that the truth about the insurrection is still under attack. consider ted cruz. who told the truth and paid the price. we are approaching a solemn anniversary this week and it is an anniversary of a violent terrorist attack on the capitol where we saw the men and women of law enforcement demonstrate incr incredible courage, incredible bravery. risk their lives to defend the men and women who serve in this capitol. but for cruz, a funny thing happened on the way to honesty. the same ted cruz who fanned the flames of the insurrection went on fox to apologize for telling the truth. that the attack on the capitol was an act of terrorism. tucker carlson accused cruz of lying, which makes sense as tucker is an expert on this subject.
by virtue of being born to my mother in calgary i was a citizen by birth. the leading republican candidates also clashed on the issues. trump accused cruz of opposing ethanol in iowa because of support from the oil lobby. cruz took a different position than trump on a deportation force to catch those in the u.s. illegally. door-to-door we don t have any system that knocks on the doors of every person in america. that is not actually how the american law enforcement system works. we also don t have people going door to door looking for murderers. we don t live in a police state. no, i don t intend to send jack boots to knock on your door and every door in america, that s not how we enforce the law for any crime. my primary opponent in iowa, only in iowa, because actually ted isn t doing well at all in new hampshire but in iowa he s doing well and my primary opponent was totally apposed to ethanol and the ethanol industry
contenders, including ted cruz, who sent an e-mail to supporters that said, obama wants your guns . this is the most antigun president we ve ever seen. reporter: the white house accused cruz of stirring up trouble. it veers into the territory of being irresponsible. reporter: house speaker paul ryan wouldn t go as far as cruz. i think he s been hostile with the second amendment all along. i don t think the president has a lot of respect for the second amendment. reporter: but aides to the president say ryan once sounded receptive two years ago when asked by the milwaukee journal sentinel. i think we need to do it in a way that we don t infringe upon people s second amendment rights. reporter: jonathan turley said mr. obama s new actions are modest and fall far short of a gun draft. gun owners shouldn t view
