Ambitious strategies are needed to turn the corner on South Africa s youth unemployment crisis

There has been no notable change in South Africa's unemployment rate in recent years. Youth unemployment has always been a problem in South Africa, which has a slow-growing economy even before the recent chaos and mayhem. According to STATSSA,  the official unemployment rate among young adults (15-34 years) was 46.3 percent in the first quarter of 2021. The rate among university graduates was 9.3%. Therefore, the riots/unrest affect youth employment negatively as it has led to demolition of state enterprises and companies/organizations that were in plan to curb the unemployment issue writes PONTSHO LEPODISI (he/him).

With such uncertainty and mistrust in our leadership and political parties, where can  South African youth turn to for honest and fair leadership?

For far too long now, the South African youth has been reduced to little more than spectators. Young people live hand-to-mouth with an increasing inequality gap where their best shot at life is  hoping that, through political connectedness, they might one day score a tender and get to emulate their leaders.
