Pale Waves - Who Am I? (Album Review) Wednesday, 17 February 2021 Written by Huw Baines
The desire to dress up mainstream pop music as something different something more dangerous or provocative has been around since the penny dropped that rebellion shifted units. Pale Waves’ 2018 debut ‘My Mind Makes Noises’ ran headlong into this dynamic and faltered: for all the eyeliner and goth stylings the LP fizzled once its anodyne hooks failed to scratch beneath the surface.
Its successor is more comfortable in its surroundings. ‘Who Am I?’ ditches the Sisters of Mercy cosplay in favour of inhabiting the slick pop-rock of the late 1990s that set the table for Avril Lavigne’s blockbuster crossover success. Here Pale Waves find more room to manoeuvre, favouring the crunch of their guitars to add heft to choruses that skew anthemic. But there’s still one crucial thing missing.
Pale Waves Post New Track Fall To Pieces Ahead Of Who Am I? Release Wednesday, 10 February 2021
Pale Waves have shared a new single, Fall To Pieces.
The pop-rock song premiered as Annie Mac s Hottest Record on her BBC Radio 1 show. It serves as the fifth preview of the Manchester band s imminent second LP, Who Am I? , due out on February 12 via Dirty Hit. Vocalist Heather Baron-Gracie said: It s easy to fall into the same patterns in a relationship, which can lead you to have the same argument over and over. Fall To Pieces is about going through that constant cycle of arguing and then making up. It can be hard to break that pattern - sometimes you wonder if you ever will.

Pale Waves have shared a new song called ‘Fall To Pieces’ – you can listen to it below.
The single follows on from ‘You Don’t Own Me’, ‘Change’, ‘She’s My Religion’ and ‘Easy’ in previewing the Manchester band’s second album ‘Who Am I?’, which comes out this Friday (February 12).
Upon the song premiering on BBC Radio 1 tonight (February 9), frontwoman Heather Baron-Gracie told Annie Mac that ‘Fall To Pieces’ is about “getting in that same argument” and experiencing a “constant cycle” during a relationship.

“This isn’t just a completely negative song – like, ‘How long until we essentially break apart?’ – it does have a glimpse of hopefulness and it does wanna defeat that evil cycle. But it’s sort of just [about] getting stuck in that same pattern.”
