Cypriot Sambo Federation President Marios Andreou has spoken of his desire to create a fully-fledged sambo school in the country as he looks to provide more opportunities for children to take up the sport.
His comments come after the federation’s first Sambo to School project was opened at the Academy Gnosis, a Russian-language school in capital Nicosia.
Andreou said only one school had signed up to the scheme, which sees children from the first and second grades studying the basics of sambo, and was hopeful of encouraging more to join. We have been conducting introductory sambo lessons in Cypriot schools for a long time, said Andreou.
Sambo to School project deployed in Cyprus for first time
A project which brings sambo into schools has been rolled out in Cyprus for the first time.
The Sambo to School scheme - previously rolled out across Russia and praised by Sergei Eliseev, President of the All-Russian and European Sambo Federations - now has a footing in Cyprus.
Students at Academy Gnosis, a Russian-language school in capital Nicosia, are formally learning the basics of the sport as part of the Sambo to School project.
Cypriot Sambo Federation President Marios Andreus hopes that other schools will join, with the national governing body not able to conduct roaming introductory sessions like it once could because of the coronavirus crisis.
