When the Covid 19 pandemic broke a little over a year ago, many had feared the spread would be hard to contain especially in developing societies such as Nigeria with weak public enlightenment arrangements. Activities which followed the outbreak confirmed such fears as many citizens behaved as though they neither heard nor understood various admonitions for people to avoid the risk of being infected.
There are still many households and individuals in Nigeria today who have remained cynical of the declarations of scientists and relevant organizations about the pandemic. The posture of disbelief in Nigeria and perhaps elsewhere in Africa was greatly increased by the fact that infections and deaths in the continent were relatively low compared to the devastating effects the pandemic has had on Europe and America. Perhaps it was indeed, a white-man’s disease, some analysts imagined.

The FCT Administration has enjoined residents to comply fully with all established health and safety protocols, so as to help curtail the spread of the Coronavirus otherwise known as COVID-19 pandemic in the Territory. This charge was given by the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello who chaired an emergency COVID-19 meeting as part of efforts to contain the spread of the second wave of the pandemic in the Territory, following the classification of the FCT as one of the epicenters, by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. A statement from the FCTAâs Chief Press Secretary, Anthony Ogunleye, yesterday disclosed that enforcement teams have been mandated to carry out the arrest of violators and prosecute them through the mobile courts system.

Some of the measures such as restrictions on religious gathering, social activities and suspension of street carnivals that usually characterise the celebration pre-COVID era, will take the shine off this year’s event.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has also ordered the closure of night clubs, pubs and other super spreader events for five weeks to tame the resurgence.
Bello decried the surge in the second wave of the pandemic, ascribing it to the lack of compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions by residents especially facial coverings in public, physical distancing and hand hygiene.
“Taking into consideration the surge in COVID-19 cases in the FCT, the PTF Guidelines issued on Tuesday December 21, and the authorization of President Muhammadu Buhari that sub-nationals should assume full ownership of this stage of the response against COVID-19, the FCT Administration hereby issues the following guidelines:
“All bars, night clubs, pubs, events and recreational venues in the FCT are to remain closed for the next five weeks;
