Human Rights Watch The first thing you need to know about the Human Rights Watch (HRW) report that was released on 27 April accusing Israel of âapartheidâ is that the accusation has nothing to do with apartheid as most people understand it, the racially-based system of oppression that was in place in South Africa before roughly 1991. HRW is accusing Israel of âcrimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution,â which are defined by a treaty called the âInternational Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid,â based on a UN General Assembly resolution passed in 1973, and the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Joe Biden has been in office for about a month. I have my doubts about the degree to which Joe himself is running things, but because he has always bent pragmatically to the winds of political (and perhaps personal) advantage, itâs not really important. Someone is making policy, in particular policy that concerns Israel. The course set by the Biden Administration appears to be almost 180 degrees from that taken by Donald Trump, and promises to bring back the sharp disagreements between the two nations that characterized the Obama period. He has already brought back most of the same people.

The first batch of Pfizer Corona-virus vaccine landed in Israel yesterday. PM Netanyahu announced that he will be the first to get it, live on television, in order to build public confidence. Although itâs impossible to get Covid from it, there is still a possibility of other side effects, and many people would prefer to let others be the pioneers with the arrows in their backs. Even the Israeli Doctorsâ Union has insisted on reviewing the research data (Hebrew link) on the vaccines before medical staffs receive it. âWe donât want to be guinea pigs,â said a spokesperson (literally, âexperimental rabbitsâ). The plan is â assuming the doctors are satisfied â is to immunize them first, followed by older citizens. I suggested that bus and taxi drivers, who are both at risk to catch the disease and to infect others, should be included, but apparently they didnât listen to me.
