GAZA, May 21 (Xinhua) Backed by regional and international support, Egypt has managed to end an 11-day violence, the worst in six years, between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip, local analysts in Gaza said.
They told Xinhua that the big loss and the external pressure had urged both Israel and the Palestinian militants to accept the cease-fire.
Calm dominated the besieged coastal enclave on Friday after the cease-fire between Israel and the militant groups, led by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the Gaza Strip, came into effect at 2:00 a.m. local time (2300 GMT Thursday) thanks to Egypt s mediation.
Xinhua Headlines: Are Israel, Hamas in Gaza on verge of all-out war?
Xinhua
by Saud Abu Ramadan, Emad Drimly GAZA, May 15 (Xinhua) Over the past six days, armed conflict between Israel and the Hamas-led militant groups has kept flaring up, marking the fiercest fighting between the two sides since 2014 that has killed more than 120 Palestinians and nearly 10 Israelis. The two sides continue a tit-for-tat exchange of fire and keep trading threats of escalation, while regional and international mediation efforts have produced little effect to defuse the spiraling tensions. At present, the international community remains gravely concerned about whether Israel will launch a ground offensive against the Islamic Hamas movement, which is in control of the Gaza Strip.
After tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have been escalated over the past few days, Palestinian analysts warn of a large-scale war in the Gasa Strip.
After more than a year of relative peace and stability in the besieged Gaza Strip, Israel and its bitter enemy Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) are again on the brink of a large-scale war, Palestinian analysts warned.
The Israeli military continued its bombardment in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, targeting buildings and apartments that led to heavy casualties, mainly among civilians, in the wake of hundreds of rockets fired from the Palestinian coastal enclave.
