republicans started this concerted effort to sow seeds of doubt as it pertains to the validity of absentee ballot voting, and in retrospect, i understood that was part of the plan that they were using to justify this attempt to overturn the results of the election. it was our georgia legislator that enabled and allowed rudy giuliani and trump s legal team to come into our house, and come into our senate and subject us and the public to hours and hours of lies and misinformation. ahead of that hearing, we were warned, we said folks told us take your address down, lock down your social media, if you speak up against them, he will be a target for republicans. during that time, when miss ruby freeman was on there, and miss moss, they were the subject of attacks. there were multiple times in which i said we have got to protect these election workers. we can t allow them to come into our legislator and put targets on two women s backs, two women who are doing their
united states target you? the president of the united states is supposed to represent every american. not to target one, but he targeted me, lady ruby. joining us now is georgia state representative v bee nguyen, she is the winner of georgia s democratic primary for secretary of state. thank you very much for joining us tonight. as you were watching that testimony yesterday, what were you thinking about how the secretary of state can help protect election workers in georgia? well i want to put some context to what led up to that moment. as a lawmaker in georgia, i was a member of the committee that oversees election laws, and i remember early on in 2020, republicans started this concerted effort to sow seeds of doubt as it pertains to the validity of absentee ballot voting, and in retrospect, i understood that was part of the plan that they were using to justify this attempt to overturn the results of the election. it was our georgia legislator that enabled and allowed rudy giulian
use of voter id laws. and the second thing they said was that people need to be very leery of mail in ballots. now back to wisconsin, an important point in wisconsin. in wisconsin law, it s embedded almost verbatim that one of the reasons the people of wisconsin have to be leery of absentee balloting in wisconsin is to prevent fraud and abuse. but the other thing they said is that we need to be leery of mail in absentee ballot voting because we need to protect people from the overzealous solicitation of voters who may not be interested in voting. that s almost verbatim. in other words, that when you open up votingti to mail in voting, you are opening yourself up to fraud because b people are being targeted who may not actually want tot vote, who may not be paying attention. so those people are targeted
legislation, because the for the people act, what it does is it gives a national start. will you re in idaho or alabama, you can have absentee ballot voting, no-excuse absentee ballot voting, and some of the issues that have led to the abuse of power. and the john lewis act, it was the eighth anniversary of the shelby versus holder decision, and that decision ripped out section five. so having the john lewis voter rights act will actually restore, creates a new formula and stores some of the expanded protection on the right to vote. just so people are clear, that piece of the voting rights act required parts of the country that have a history of discriminating against people unlawfully at the ballot box from getting clearance. it s called preclearance, before they change their rules any further, and that ruling in the supreme court kind of pulled out what many would consider the teeth of the voting rights act.
precious right. so for that reason, i think we desperately need the for the people act and the john lewis voting rights advancement act. we need both pieces of legislation, because the for the people act, what it does is it gives a national standard. will you re in idaho or alabama, it eighties a national standard where you can have automatic voter registration, where you can have absentee ballot voting, it also deals with gerrymandering and dark money, some of the issues that have literally been abused and have led to the abuse of power. and the john lewis act, it was the eighth anniversary of the shelby versus holder decision, and that decision ripped out section 5. so having the john lewis voter rights act will actually restore, creates a new formula and stores some of the expanded protection on the right to vote. just so people are clear, that piece of the voting rights act required parts of the country that have a history of discriminating against people unlawfully at the ballot
