A father and his three sons, as well as an employee of the family, are behind bars at the Belize Central Prison where they will remain until August tenth when they are set to return to court. On Wednesday afternoon, forty-one-year-old Johan Petkau, a resident of Shipyard, Orange Walk District, appeared in the lower court along with Jacob, George and Franze Petkau where they were jointly charged for kidnapping and wounding twenty-year-old Abram Andres. As we reported, several members of the Petkau family, accompanied by eighteen-year-old Angel Ayala, showed up at Central Meat Distributors on Monday afternoon where they forcibly took Andres to an area of that Mennonite community and beat him. Andres was whipped repeatedly using an electrical cord. The incident was reportedly triggered by a previous altercation between Andres and one of the Petkau boys. A Mennonite Butcher is Kidnapped and Beaten in Shipyard
Was it a kidnapping or a case of vigilante justice? That is the question tonight following an incident in Shipyard, a Mennonite community that usually goes about its business in a laid-back and nonviolent routine. Earlier this week that peace was shattered when several members of one family viciously attacked a fellow resident at his jobsite, tossed him inside a waiting pickup, took him by force to a distant location and then gave him a sound beating. It is reportedly the result of an argument between two young men. This morning, reporter Isani Cayetano headed to Orange Walk District where he found out more about what happened in Shipyard.
