The Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) of the University of Ghana, Professor Abraham Kwabena Annan, has called on the government to intensify the coverage of hepatitis B vaccination in the country as part of measures to keep the viral disease at bay.
He said although the country had made significant strides in the fight against the disease, including the adoption of a national guideline for the prevention, care and treatment of viral hepatitis, issues of low education, awareness and vaccination remained a major challenge.
He called on the government to build partnerships with health professionals, institutions and stakeholders to implement a vaccination plan that would help intensify coverage and precisely target vulnerable groups and communities.

NIB exposes Noguchi COVID-19 test alarmist

The University of Ghana Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) has concluded that the allegations in respect of falsified COVID-19 test results from the institute were untrue.
According to the Institue, it arrived at the conclusion following internal investigations conducted by a five-member committee, together with that of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
Having satisfied itself upon the two investigations, the NMIMR has threatened it would take the necessary steps to redeem its image.
Pushed to mention the specific steps to be taken, Professor Abraham Kwabena Annan, Director of the Institution, only said the issue had been referred to its Legal Department, but would not state what specifically would be done.
The Chairperson of the COVID-19 National Trust Fund, Justice Sophia Akuffo, has stated that the fund closed down its warehouse because of dwindling finances and donations.
According to her, since October last year, the fund received a donation only last week and had just GH¢ 6 million left in its coffers.
Justice Akuffo made the disclosure at the installation and inauguration of a SchuyLab digital Laboratory Information System (LIS) at the Virology Laboratory at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Accra yesterday.
“Now, our warehouse is empty and has been handed back to the army who are the original owners. We do not have any items; no Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), no sanitiser, nothing,” she said.
