When the crocodile’s jaws closed upon Val Plumwood, she was alongside a steep muddy bank in the driving rain of Kakadu, grasping the lower branches of a sandpaper fig tree. Despite her fierce fighting, the crocodile had already pulled her under the water twice; now it took her for a third, violent death roll. As Plumwood was submerged, she felt convinced this was the end.
