"Reproductive rights include the right to choose whether and when to have children, the right to choose the number of children and the right to access to safe and legal abortions", the Court added.
The Court held that in cases where minors seek termination of their pregnancy, Registered Medical Practitioners need not disclose the identity of the minor to police, even though the same is required under the POCSO Act.
The Court stressed that it is necessary to re-assess and adapt sex education and cyber awareness, especially since a significant portion of teen pregnancies seemed to involve close relatives.
The High Court had said that only victims of rape, minors, women whose marital status changed during pregnancy, mentally-ill women, or women with foetal malformation are allowed to terminate pregnancy upto 24 weeks.
