The court heard on Tuesday that the State and the defence had been negotiating behind the scenes and that they were now in the process of finalising a plea and sentence agreement.
The high-ranking official in the Gauteng Department of Health died in August 2021, after being shot outside her Johannesburg south home allegedly by six suspected hitmen who were arrested in the days that followed her murder.
The trial was meant to get underway in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday but one of the accused’s advocates is unwell and so the matter’s had to be postponed.
On 17 July 2023, the trial of the six men accused of killing whistleblower Babita Deokaran was meant to get underway in the Johannesburg High Court, but the matter had to be postponed due to one of the accused’s advocates being unwell. The case has now been postponed until 7 August.
