After four straight three-quarter-point interest rate hikes, the Federal Reserve is set to announce a smaller half-point increase in its key rate Wednesday, a first step toward dialing back its efforts to combat inflation. At the same time, the Fed is expected to signal that it plans more hikes next year than it had previously forecast to try to conquer the worst inflation bout in four decades.

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) surprised the political world when he announced over the weekend that he cannot support President Biden's Build Back Better agenda as it currently exists in the Senate, throwing the fate of the controversial bill into limbo. Also, some high-ranking Republican senators are pushing for the Senate to take up the Taylor Force Martyr Prevention Payment Act, which would close a loophole that is allowing the families of people who commit acts of terrorism to receive payment for their martyrdom.
