Mombasa county government has sacked dozens of doctors, including KMPDU boss Chibanzi Mwachonda and senior specialists for refusing to return to work.
In a letter signed by county secretary Jeizan Faruk, Governor Hassan Joho’s administration dismissed 86 striking workers for boycotting duty. Following the correspondence shared between the Department of Health and the County Public Service Board on the doctors strike, the Board, pursuant to Section 59 (1) (c) of the County Governments Act number 17 of 2012, hereby conveys its decision via Special Board meeting held on January 5, 2021 that all the doctors who have failed, refused and/or neglected to return to work be dismissed from county services as provided for under Section 44 (4) (a), (c) and (e) of the Employment Act 2007 which constitute justifiable or lawful grounds for the dismissal as highlighted in the Act, the devolved unit said.

The Mombasa County Government has made true its threat and sacked 86 doctors over what County Executive Jeizen Faruk regarded as gross misconduct.
In a letter seen by The Standard, the sacked medical doctors failed to return to work as directed by the County Public Service Board and Health Department.
Among those sacked is the acting secretary-general of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board Union (KMPDU), Dr Mwachonda Chibanzi, and other senior specialists.
In a letter signed by Faruk, the doctors were ordered to surrender all the property belonging to the county government to their superiors.

It took Tom Wanyere three days of frantic calls to persuade a doctor to agree to attend to his 28-year-old son battling stomach cancer at Coast General Hospital (CGH) in Mombasa.
But by yesterday afternoon, the doctor had not turned up.
A desperate Mr Wanyera even turned to passersby outside CGH to find out whether any had skills to change his son’s intravenous tube.

Mombasa County threatens to close hospital linked to KPMDU officials

Mombasa County Government has threatened to close down a private hospital owned by a senior doctors union official for, allegedly, flaunting the public health laws.
In a letter by County Medical Officer Dr Kassam Yusuf, the county said an inspection of the hospital was conducted on December 10, 2020, and found the facility wanting.
The county said the hospital has not met eight requirements including the Covid-19 health protocols.
According to Montana Hospital s lawyer Nelson Sitonik, the facility is owned by Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) Coast Branch Secretary-General Dr Abidan Mwachi.
