Ottawa city council narrowly passed a plan Wednesday to spend up to $150,000 to study ways to safely reopen a popular sledding hill at Mooney's Bay, but the mayor and some other council members remain convinced no feasible option exists.
A motion from Coun. Riley Brockington called on city staff to safely re-open the north-facing side of the hill for sledding this winter while keeping other sides closed. It failed by a vote of 11 yeas to 12 nays.
The city should allow tobogganing on a steep hill at Mooney's Bay Park and work to make it safer, despite a recent city review that deemed the area unsafe, the councillor representing the ward is urging.
The city of Ottawa has concluded the hill at Mooney s Bay Park is not safe for sledding, and will install "robust temporary seasonal fencing" to discourage people from tobogganing this winter.
