A project researching the effectiveness of polymer injection for enhanced heavy oil recovery in the Milne Point field on Alaskas North Slope is verifying significant benefits from the use of this injection technique. The $9.7 million project, primarily funded through a $7.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, is led by the University of Alaska Fairbanks and involves Milne Point operator Hilcorp Alaska, New Mexico Tech, Missouri S&T and the University of North Dakota.

Hilcorp Alaska purchased the Milne Point field from BP in 2014 and has focused on increasing recovery of its “heavy” oils since then. The effort got a boost from a four-year, $9.7 million Department of Energy-sponsored study that got underway in 2018. (Photo/Courtesy/Hilcorp Energy Co.)
The early results are promising in a years-long study of an advanced oil recovery method that could unlock billions more barrels on the North Slope.
“We have not failed; let me put it that way. We have succeeded so far,” said Abhijit Dandekar, chair of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Petroleum Engineering Department.
