Johannesburg - It was ironically only in August last year that Archbishop Abel Gabuza wrote a reflection on the coronavirus pandemic.
âThe call for us today in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic is to continue the journey of staying spiritually healthy,â he wrote.
On Sunday, however, Covid-19 claimed the life of the coadjutor archbishop of Durban since December 2018, and former bishop of Kimberley. He was 65.
Born one of six children on March 23, 1955, in Alexandra, Joburg, Gabuza would always highlight the role of his parents in his life.

Covid-19 has claimed the life of the Catholic Church s archbishop coadjutor of the archdiocese of Durban, Abel Gabuza.
Cardinal Wilfrid Napier, the Catholic Archbishop of Durban, made the announcement on Sunday. Gabuza died at Hillcrest Hospital on Sunday morning after a week in ICU battling Covid-19.
“The archbishop had not been with us in Durban long just short of two years but in that time we came to recognise him as a gentle, caring and warm-hearted pastor.
Archbishop Cardinal Wilfrid Napier has thanked the doctors who treated and cared for Gabuza.
Gabuza moved to Durban from Kimberley two years ago after leaving his home diocese in Pretoria.
