Emmanuel Macron pledges €1bn for cybersecurity after hospital ransomware attacks

06:15 AM French president Emmanuel Macron has promised to invest €1 billion in a national cybersecurity strategy, following ransomware attacks on two hospitals this month. The hospitals at Dax and Villefranche-sur-Saône were paralysed by attacks in which hackers blocked the telephone systems, forcing the hospitals to shut off the internet service and other networks to keep the ransomware from spreading. This affected patient records, surgical devices, medication management, appointments, bed and doctor allocation. Patient operations were postponed and some patients moved to other hospitals, while hospital staff were forced to return to paper-based methods such as hand-made service charts and appointment books.

Outsourcing firm behind NHS Test and Trace hit by ransomware attack

10:20 AM Hampshire-based outsourcing firm, Serco has confirmed that parts of its infrastructure in mainland Europe have experienced a double extortion ransomware attack from cybercriminals operating the Babuk group. The ransomware encrypts a victim s network and files after hackers have stolen data. It then proceeds to inform the victim of the breach by creating a note which asks the victim to negotiate an extortion payment to prevent stolen data from being released. WHY IT MATTERS Although the Department of Health and Social Care told Healthcare IT News that the NHS Test and Trace programme was unaffected by the attack, experts have warned that the vulnerabilities in Serco s wider systems are of concern as the attack has exposed potential weaknesses.
