Over the last several months, we have seen a spike in gun violence incidents in Portland, which recorded its deadliest year in a quarter century. Too many of these incidents involved adolescent Black youth as victims, friends and family members. Ja’mere Brown, 18; Abdushukri Uren, 16; Jaelin James Scott, 16; Mister Ford, 19; Julian Heredia, 19; and Shai’India Harris, 18, all lost their lives to gun violence.

This marks the most killings that the city has experienced since the early 1990s. Since Saturday, four people of color have been gunned down in North, Northeast and Southeast Portland. The list includes 44-year old marijuana dispensary employee Michael Arthur, 23-year-old Uber driver Dhulfiqar Kareem Mseer, 53-year-old Kelley Marie Smith and 16-year-old Abdushukri Uren. Three of the shootings were the result of gang-related violence. The increase in shooting-related deaths has mounted in an extraordinary year when the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic, social justice protests, wildfires and a contested presidential election have dominated headlines.

A 16-year-old was killed in a Monday afternoon shooting in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). Abdushukri Uren, 16, was struck by gunfire during a shooting incident that took place over several blocks of Southeast 136th Avenue from Holgate Boulevard to Division Street, police said.  The teen was found gravely wounded near 136th and Division and was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The state medical examiner s office ruled the death a homicide.

KGW has learned a teacher from nearby Rigler Elementary School was carjacked at gunpoint while delivering supplies to students. This is a person minding their own business, trying to serve the community the way teachers do and they re met with armed people stealing their means of transportation but really interfering with their livelihood and life, placing them at great risk, said Lt. Greg Pashley of the Portland Police Bureau.
