Ever Given crew could be stuck on vessel for years 9News.com.au 3 hrs ago 9News Staff
Crew onboard the cargo ship that got jammed in Egypt s Suez Canal last month could be stuck on the vessel for years as authorities argue over costs and damages.
Egyptian authorities and the Ever Given s owner are working through a financial dispute and there is a chance its crew members could be held on the ship until the issue resolves, the canal chief and a judicial official said.
Lieutenant General Osama Rabie said the hulking Ever Given would not be allowed to leave the country until a compensation amount is settled on with the vessel s Japanese owner, Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd.
They should not feel any heat at all from this whole incident.
But the SCA have said the crew are in fact allowed to leave the ship whenever they choose, however there are some exceptions â the captain cannot leave the ship and there must be enough crew left behind to tend to the vessel.
This is similar to a case involving Mohammed Aisha, a ship captain who was stuck on the MV Aman cargo vessel for four years.Â
A legal dispute occurred between Egyptian authorities and the ship s owners over expired safety equipment and classification certificates, the National Post said.
