all right, 4:51 a.m. in the east. breaking news right now. king juan carlos of spain is abdicating after nearly 40 years on the throne. his son, prince philippe, will succeed him. juan carlos is 76 years old. his health has been failing in recent months. he s best known for helping smooth spain s transition to democracy in the 1970s at the end of francisco franco s dictatorship. don t hear about abdication. people forget the 70s and the turmoil in spain, but he was a part of bringing that to an end. 52 minutes after the hour. french authorities have arrested a suspect in last month s deadly shootings at a jewish museum in brussels. the suspect is a 29-year-old frenchman with a long criminal history.

for some answers, joining me now, katie nichol, she s also royal correspondent for the mail on sunday and author of william and harry behind the palace walls. first of all, katie, thank you so much for staying up. it s after 2:00 in the morning there. appreciate it. you re welcome. the first question go goes to the significance of this event. william with the marriage and now the baby has done so much to restore luster and bring attention back to the royalty. what do you think this will mean going-forward in terms of how much focus will be on this new family? well, i think longevity and stability and continuity. those are the words that spring to mind for me, i think that s what makes our british family, royal family so unique, and this is a continuation of what victoria was saying in her report, i thought she was right. there s no question of the queen abdicating, it s not going to happen. she will be looking at her family. at her dynasty.
shouldn t there be some abdications? it s an interesting point, chris, because i do feel that the boldness of prince william proves the ultimate failure of all attempts to find a cure for baldness. because if one could have been found, surely prince william would have had it. yeah, absolutely. but you re right. i think that the date we re talking about, kind of 2070 by the time we see this little kid taking over the throne. because they re all living longer and longer. and they won t abdicate. the queen won t abdicate. we ve seen the dutch royal family abdicate, the belgian royal family abdicate. the queen won t abdicate. and you know, chris, sometimes when i have a slow news day, i call up the palace and i say to them is the queen thinking of abdicating? and they always say, well, allow
