(Amy Beth Bennett /South Florida Sun-Sentinel via AP) OAN Newsroom UPDATED 6:51 PM PT – Sunday, July 4, 2021 Miami officials have made plans to move forward with demolishing the remaining structure of the mostly collapsed Surfside condo in Florida. During a press conference on Sunday, officials announced the demolition was set to take place between 10 p.m. on Sunday and 3 a.m. on Monday. Workers on the site have been drilling into columns of the structure, where explosive charges will be inserted to bring the building down. Officials reported search and rescue would resume operations in the matter of minutes once given the all clear. The number of deaths currently stands at 24, with 121 people still missing.

Police: Surfside condo demolition to begin overnight

  Miami-Dade officials said Sunday that the controlled demolition of the uncollapsed portion of the Surfside condo building will begin overnight as the area braces for the arrival of Tropical Storm Elsa. “The demolition of Champlain Towers South will take place tonight between 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.,” Miami-Dade police said in a Twitter post. “We urge residents who live in the Shelter in Place Zone – between 86th St and 89th St and Abbott Ave and the shoreline – to stay indoors effective immediately.”  The department added that dust from the implosion is unavoidable, and as a precautionary measure, we recommend you close all windows, doors and air intakes.

The demolition of the building was brought forward to secure the site ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa. Search efforts were halted as a precaution as work on the demolition got underway.

Marlena Inez Choneska, 44, Toledo, was arrested at 108 W. State St. by the Toledo Police Dept. on a warrant. Dec. 5 Maria Del Carmen Kiebach, 48, Toledo, was arrested at 207 W. State Hwy. 30 by the Toledo Police Dept. for a domestic abuse assault with injury charge. She was released Dec. 5 on pre-trial.
