Egyptian geologist and water expert Abbas Sharaqi warned that Egypt faces the risk of flooding just as severe as in the Libyan city of Derna if the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) collapses, RT reported.
The turbines of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) have not been working for the second month in a row, RT quoted an Egyptian water professor at Cairo University, Abbas Sharaqi, as saying.
Egypt continues to strengthen its security relations with the countries of the Nile Basin, most recently with Kenya, with no end in sight of the crisis with Ethiopia over its Nile dam.

CAIRO Egypt’s Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources revealed May 2 four projects and plans to reduce water waste in the country, counter the growing need for water in the future and help mitigate the negative impact of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on its irrigation system.
Masrawy news portal quoted Mohamed Ghanem, spokesman for the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources, as saying that they have prepared for all potential scenarios, including worst-case scenarios, by adopting a good management system for every drop of water.
He noted that projects are currently underway as part of the plan, most notably the rehabilitation and lining of canals and drains at a cost of 80 billion Egyptian pounds ($5.1 million), and that the project will limit water loss and allow a better water flow.

CAIRO Ethiopia has proposed holding a meeting of the African Union Assembly in a bid to end the deadlock over the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) trilateral talks between Addis Ababa, Cairo and Khartoum, which have reached a dead end.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an April 21 statement, “[Ethiopia] still believes that the trilateral negotiations within the framework of [mediations] led by the African Union (AU) is the best way to achieve a win-win outcome for all.”
The statement cited Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as saying, “The assumption that the negotiations have failed is not true because the talks have actually achieved tangible results, notably the signing of the Declaration of Principles.”
