On April 24, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd arrived at Aarey to cut 177 trees after getting a nod from the Supreme Court. Locals say the real number is higher and that the move has left them without history.
Last week, the Supreme Court had levied Rs 10 lakh fine on the MMRC for seeking to cut more trees over and above the permitted 84 trees as well as violating the judiciary's order.
Senior Advocate Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, appearing for MMRCL, informed the Court that when the application was filed, it was for felling of 84 trees, but with the passage of time, the land saw growth of more trees.
