Aanum Pennum Review: A bold anthology on man-woman relationships

Aanum Pennum Review: A bold anthology on man-woman relationships Aanum Pennum might not be a great film, but it certainly is a brave attempt, representing women in its three stories concentrating on the man-woman relationships. Even after hundred years of cinema and storytelling, the subject of the man-woman relationship remains intriguing enough to be explored further as per the changing times and mindsets. The new anthology from Malayalam cinema, boldly attempts the same, depicting three distinctive eras with praiseworthy lead performances. Aanum Pennum (meaning Man and Woman) begins with the story of Savithri, who is brave, confident, and a communist comrade, disguised as a house-help in the times of the British Raj. A politically inclined tale, it represents the widely prevalent caste-gender divide of those times along with references to Indian mythology. Directed by Jay K, the segment has impressive performances by Samyuktha Menon and Joju George.

The queen holds the reign: Parvathy Thiruvothu s 15-year career is crash course in good cinema- The New Indian Express

Express News Service Panimalar in Maryan (2013) often described as ‘Roja, but with fishermen’ is a woman forlorn in the absence of Dhanush’s character, Maryan. Oozing old-world sensuality and charm reminiscent of yesteryear icons such as Sharada and Waheeda Rahman, Panimalar played by Parvathy Thiruvothu is the symbol of love and its strength to move mountains. An actor who believes, “cinema is an opportunity for her to be a good person”, Thiruvothu’s 15-year career so far and her choice of films reiterates this statement. It shows her evolution not just as an actor, but as an individual as well. Careful about the films she takes on, the actor is known to prioritise the film’s core politics and whether or not she agrees with it. This is a welcome departure from actors who often worry that standing up for the right reasons could cost them opportunities.
