Pubs in Sydney s eastern suburbs are trying to take advantage of a legal loophole to turn their gaming rooms into smoking lounges by simply removing part of the roof.
The Bellevue and Woollahra hotels have applied to Woollahra Council to turn their gaming rooms into unenclosed spaces, thus allowing patrons to smoke under NSW anti-smoking laws.
Alecia Brooks, Cancer Council NSW s Tobacco Control Manager, said the state government should close the loophole that permits smoking in a public space if it is regarded as un-enclosed or at least 25 per cent open because of the installation of openings such as air vents, louvres and shutters.
