The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday observed that when the criteria for an international airport was met by Madurai airport, why had the Centre not taken steps to declare/notify the airport as an international airport.
A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and S. Ananthi sought a response from the Centre in three separate public interest litigation petitions filed by the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, represented by its president N. Jegatheesan. The petitioner sought a direction to the Centre to take steps to declare Madurai airport as an international airport. The declaration of the Madurai airport as an international airport would boost industrial and economic growth in Southern Tamil Nadu, he said. Facilities in Madurai at par with international airports: petitioner The Centre on Monday informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that approval from the Union Cabinet was required in order to upgrade or notify the status of the Madurai airport as an international airport.
A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and S. Ananthi directed the Centre to submit a counter affidavit in the case. The court was hearing the public interest litigation petition filed by A. Satheesh Kumar, president of the Forum of Tour Organisers, Madurai.

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday ordered notice to the Centre and the State on a PIL petition seeking direction to notify Madurai airport as international airport.
A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and S. Ananthi, however, made it clear that it was a matter of policy decision. It sought response and adjourned the plea filed by A. Satheesh Kumar, president of Forum of Tour Organisers, Madurai.
The petitioner said Madurai and other southern districts in the State were dependent on the airport in Madurai. It remained a domestic airport till 2012 and was then declared a customs airport with limited international flights. The spacious integrated terminal building was capable of handling 700 peak hour passengers. It could handle 1.5 million passengers a year and had the potential for growth in terms of passenger operations.
