Earlier, on Tuesday afternoon, pressure had dropped in a similar fashion, leaving two patients dead. Pressure had been restored immediately and normal supply resumed. But around midnight, the pressure dropped again drastically and within two hours, 11 people had died. A patient in the ICU said he watched helplessly as a woman two beds away struggled for breath and passed away. The fear that you could be next is the worst thing that can happen to anyone, he said.

Chennai: Sources said more than 500 patients were undergoing treatment at the Chengalpattu GH and on Tuesday around 10.30 pm out of which 13 patients who were already critical died without responding for treatments one by one in a few minutes since the doctors could not provide oxygen supply for them.  When the oxygen supply ran out, the hospital staff took the oxygen from the ambulances and managed to give it to a few patients who were desperately in need of oxygen but could not be of much help, eyewitnesses alleged. By around midnight the oxygen cylinders from the SRM and Karpaga Vinayaga medical college reached the Chengalpattu GH and the situation was brought under control. However, still 13 patients lost their lives.

Thirteen COVID-19 patients died after oxygen supply was disrupted due to poor pressure in the oxygen tank at the Chengalpattu Government Hospital in Tamil Nadu late on Tuesday. Confirming the death of the 13 patients on Wednesday, J. Muthukumaran, Dean of the hospital, said oxygen was available in the tank from which it was supplied to more than 300 patients admitted to the COVID-19 ward, but it did not have sufficient pressure.

According to a release, the building has adequate facilities, including uninterrupted power and water supply, lift service and a public address system. A. John Louis, Chengalpattu Collector, and Priya Raj, Deputy Director of Health, along with other officials, visited the VIT Chennai campus on April 13 to examine the facilities available for setting up the COVID-19 care centre.
