Tommy Mah was in his first year at the University of B.C., studying engineering, when he got a job at the Vancouver Chinatown branch of the Bank of Montreal in 1946.
“There was a manager, a senior counter clerk, two tellers, and four other female clerks, a stenographer, and my father,” says Mah’s daughter Pamela Quan. “He didn’t have a title yet.”

When Mah died four years ago at the age of 91, Quan made copies of the memoirs he left in a file on his computer.
