neil: all right. charlie gasparino is the best business reporter on the planet. but some interesting observations about desantis and his unforced errors. but look at the $8.2 million, that s what he raised in the first 24 hours of his announcement. dr. gasparino joins us right now. for all the stuff that you rightly cite, charlie, financially at least, he s still on fire. what do you make of that? i agree. this is a glass half empty, glass half full pitcher. the glass half empty is that, you know, he wasted his time for a while. he was letting trump take shots at him. he should have started his campaign on a high note a couple months ago. the glass half full is interesting as well. i ll tell you, i m getting this
acknowledged they were fund-raising for the campaign. and separately, in an exclusive interview, north dakota governor doug berg said he s considering launching a presidential bid in the coming weeks. joining us now with more is dasha burns here in miami and nbc news national politics reporter henry gomez, who spoke to governor berg . dasha, desantis campaign said it raked in a hefty sum in fund-raising in the first 24 hours. yeah, that s right. $8.2 million in 24 hours. that s a significant figure. it beats what biden raised during that same period in 2019 when he announced his bid for the 2020 election. it took former president trump about six weeks to reach around $9.2 million, according to the new york times. that s an important number and it is one we re probably going to hear a lot from the campaign as they try to make their case and use that as evidence to say,
desantis announcing their 2024 bids as biden slogs along. desantis hitting the ground running. he is having a campaign event tuesday and his team says he already raked in, get this, a record, 8.2 million bucks in just the first 24 hours of his campaign. that s way over what biden did in 2019 when he announced his campaign in the first 24 hours making $6.3 million. so he s definitely hitting the ground running. peter doocy has more from the white house. the biden team hasn t said how much money they raised in the first one month and one day of their campaign. when it is a lot, usually the campaigns brag about that. but as we know and as we are hearing today, money isn t everything. jeb bush found that it is not enough to ultimately win over the voters. that s been true. rudy giuliani in 2008, a
$8.2 million. something tells me by the time we get to the end of this quarter, which is the end of june, that we re going to see rosily eclipsing, and maybe by several times, what donald trump got in 136 days. so that has tends to have an impact. we may see some closing of the polls simply because the people who are for ron desantis appear to be more motivated right now than the people who are for donald trump. that, particularly in the early states, could have an impact. desantis certainly is going to hit the ground running. his travel next week, des moines, iowa. sioux city. cedar rapids. trump has one event in iowa on june the 1st. desantis has a lot of ground to make up, because trump has been all over iowa for the past few months. yeah, that s right. and look, that s what this is all about. you have to show up in iowa and new hampshire. in fact, you have to show up several times.
the desantis campaign, david, is touting the $8.2 million it raised in the first 24 hours after he became an official presidential candidate. that s nearly $2 million more than biden raised in his first 24 hours back in 2019. so, how significant is this? well, i think it is significant, wolf. money is important in campaigns. and he s proven the ability to raise it. and that will help sustain him in this race. he ll be able to get his message out. he ll be able to survive the eastbo ebbs and flows and duke it out with donald trump, who also has cig significant resources. the real question with desantis is he s offering himself as a new and improved trump, a trump without the crazy. he ll fire the fbi director, he ll pardon the january 6th folks, he ll bring the doj to heel and so on.
