reporter: everyone is surprised. people who are down here are surprised. everyone we talked to this is not a crowd that typically pays attention to the news or cares about what s happening in the world, in cable news. everybody that we speak to down here is either watching it, talking about it, heard about it, taking selfies in front of the place. it s a shock that this man existed in plain sight. by the way, three blocks away from the 9th precinct where the perp walk happened. everyone rides the subway, which is why there s interest in this. miguel, thank you very much. perspective from c tandrew mccabe. how do you explain this? of all the things you have seen, how do you explain this? he called the police on himself.
this is somebody who was considered armed and dangerous because the weapons he brought on to that subway. there was the u-haul, the warning that if you approach the u-haul, be very, very careful, but at the end of the day, you said he was arrested without incident. it seems as though. at least that s the latest information that i have from someone that says he was in custody and it seems there was no incident here. they took him into custody and that he s at the 9th precinct and it was around 1st street where he was taken into custody. it s remarkable to me this guy was not hiding. you d think these kind of individuals, when they re wanted by the police in such a way, think about the manhunt that was underway here and this guy s just walking the streets then these two officers see him and they took him into custody. i think that s remarkable. i think we ll learn more hopefully here shortly about the
so it seems that frank james here was walking the streets freely. almost nonchalantly. maybe not realizing there was in man hunt for him. so very good police officers on routine patrol see him, took him into custody and now he s over at the 9th precinct. we re also waiting to hear from the police department. they were expected to have a 2:00 press conference and obviously now with this new information, this will likely get delayed, but obviously a huge sigh of relief for people here in new york city, for law enforcement, as they now believe they have the guy they ve been looking for. i can also tell you that all through the night and into this morning, police officials from the u.s. martials, the fbi, other law enforcement officials were out scouring new york city. they went to several locations to try and find him. they didn t find him and he was just walking the streets like it was nothing and he was just taken into custody by these officers. fascinating.
it might look a little chaotic. there s a huge number of press here and a massive police force as well that s come in here now that this individual has been arrested. lots of police officers coming in and out of the precinct. shaking hands, hugging, bumping fists. ch clearly a since of relief this individual has been arrest ed. his arrest as mundane as arrests come. he was picked up on the street. people were all around him taking videos of it and he was put into a police car without almost anybody saying anything. it s not clear if we re going to see him soon out of this pre precinct. there are federal charges he faces as well. that may come into play. it is possible at some point we will see this suspect, this alleged shooter come out of the 9th precinct here. the officers who picked him up clearly a great day for them and
manhattan. he s been taking to the 9th precinct. we re expecting to have a press conference from the police shortly. they were just supposed to update us on the investigation, put out new fphotos and video. that now changes everything. they now have the guy that s in custody and hopefully we ll hear more about how these officers took him into custody. it s remarkable. daylight out. 2:00 in the afternoon here and this person, not far from here, really. we are pretty close to manhattan. yeah, this manhunt was not what ended this. just two officers paying attention. you said you spoke with someone who took pictures of who thought was frank james. was that photograph taken anywhere near where he was arrested? not far, victor. sort of around the canal street
