planes? it s a couple things. boeing stopped producing them in the 1990s. they re old by definition. southwest has 288 of them. there s about 900 worldwide. the 737 300, is especially subject to the constant short haul. the short hauls pressurized, depressurize, i forget, i think it was 37,000 cycles a lot of cycles on this particular aircraft. with that number of cycles and the constant landing and takeoff, the planes are subject to medal fatigue. it wouldn t be a problem if the inspection oversight was good. we ve had some problems with southwest. they ve been fine by the faa for laxed oversight. problems with their repair stations. the bigger problem, i think the board is addressing this, the technology used for these cracks is not necessarily going to find them. that s why the faa in november issued a new rule basically saying let s put these planes out of service. they have service limits within five years. let s get them out of the fleet

a flight attendant was slightly injured. the plane bound for sacramento made an emergency landing in yuma, arizona. it sounded like an explosion at least. all of a sudden there s a big sunroof in the middle of the plane. big old hole. you can see daylight coming through it. all of a sudden the oxygen masks dropped. everyone was just trying to get the maskses on. it was scary. it sounded like a shot and a lot of air decompressing and it was quick and it was scary. since then, southwest has grounded the 737s and canceled flights. just last hour i asked cnn s jeanne meserve about the inspections. southwest is inspecting 79 boeing 737 300s in its fleet. so far, small subsurface cracks have been detected in three additional aircraft. 19 have been returned to service. boeing is drafting a voluntary
