when we get back into the congress, that will be the first question on my mind when ways and means committee meets. we re not joking around. nobody is above the law. hear me, read my lips, mr. president, former. yeah, very important words. obviously, oversight is an incredible part of this. you just outlined that this has been years in the making, my question to you realistically, when democrats get their hands on this, or when the congress or committee gets their hands on this, you re only going to be in power for a few more weeks. realistically, what can ways and meanst do with the information that the committee gleans from the taxhe returns. 6103, subsection j subsection f, i m sorry, is very clear. we are not allowed to scream to the heavens when we get this document. we have to honor it, it s
confidential. we will decide one way or the other what will be made of it. and i believe the entire nation should have the main knowledge ofma this report of what happen and how did the president of the united states use the jibe about handing an order of his own, prevent him from telling us, or showing us, like every president since richard nixon, show have his income tax, tax returns, made public. we ll decide that. we can t just go willy-nilly, and we re not going to do it. we ve honored the law, that s why when i dusted off 6103, back in 2017, no one understood what the heck i was talking about. because that when you re dealing with taxen law. yeah. you have to understand that it s not just about how you put
congressman, i ve got to ask you, because you sit on the all important ways and means committee and that is the committee that is going to get access now to trump s tax returns. first of all, what do you expect the timeline to be? when do you expect to get access to that and what are you going to be looking for? first of all, we expect them to be delivered as they should have been, you know, immediately, section 6103 of the tax code is unambiguous. the ways and means committee, the chairman of the committee has absolute right to examine any return. the full committee, not likely, will see all of this. the chairman will have to make a decision about what he can do with the information. but most important aspect of this, the reason to look at it is to determine a couple of things, one, whether or not the irs was properly enforcing the tax laws of the united states on the president of the united states. that s an important oversight responsibility that we have. but we also have a legi
under section 6103. treasury must furnish the information to the committee. we also are getting a statement from house ways and means chairman say, quote, as i have maintained for years, the committee s case is very strong and the law is on our side. i am glad that the department of justice agrees and that we can move forward. now, there are still questions as to whether or not the former president is going to fight this decision. but it is a clear indication that the biden administration is not going to be standing in the way of releasing these tax returns. we still are awaiting a formal decision from the treasury department on what the next steps are going to be. lauren fox, thank you. up next, after scrambling on the final details of the bill s text, the $1 trillion infrastructure deal moves forward in the senate. one of the 16 gop senators who voted moments ago for this deal to move forward to the next step joins us live next.
to the ways and means chairman, richard neil. he asked for these returns in april of 2019, arguing that he had the authority to get them under a little-known statute known as 6103. he then subpoenaed them in addition to that. this is essentially the justice department giving this legal guidance that it is treasury s responsibility to turn those returns over. when this would occurr is still an open question and we are awaiting more detail as to what treasury s plans are. i think that s something to keep in mind here, but we re also looking at whether or not former president, donald trump, would try to block this action, given the fact that these are his tax returns. a lot of moving pieces here. but the bottom line is this is coming after months of delays over whether or not the biden administration was going to keep fighting to block these tax returns or whether or not they believed that it was the responsibility of the treasury department to turn them over. so we are getting that addit
