does it really say that? can it really do that? senator ron johnson sits on the budget committee. the republican sits live on capitol hill. the pleasure to talk to you. the republican side of your committee, the budget committee, reportedly did a preliminary analysis and determined following from the budget. not 600 but 800 billion in tax increases. 7.3 trillion in new debt. an actual deficit reduction of only 280 billion. two questions, is that roughly accurate, and, second of all, if it is, is that unacceptable? yeah. i mean it is not a serious budget. it never provides balance. doesn t put us on a glide path to live within our means. 10-year spending compared to what the house proposes. it raises spending by $5 trillion. more an trillion dollars over the cbo baseline and house budget and increases deficit by $4 trillion over the house proposal.
costs are the indirect ones i know you ve illuminated in your work, too. in other words, the u.s. military pays, i mean, the oil industry can t operate without the u.s. military providing security presence. $7.3 trillion just for aircraft carriers in the persian gulf over the past couple decades. right. that is not a cost a lot of people recognize that, of the american taxpayer footing the bill for but the oil company gets a huge deal. they get to use that as their own personal security detail. it s a huge cost for american taxpayers. so, dr. hanson, as we come to better understand the free market can only function if there is actual integrity in the prices, actual integrity if we man up if you will and deal with the actual cost of the energy sources that we re choosing, how is it that the proposal that you have been discussing and are introducing effectively more broadly now to restore price integrity works, how do we fix

how can the republicans maintain that they are in any way acting as representatives of the people when they are taking a position that is opposed by over 70% of the people. i find it interesting you would phrase the question that way. one thing we hear repeatedly from people from coast to coast is that washington doesn t have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem. and what the american people would really like to see us do is to get this out of control, wasteful washington spending under control. we have heard from economists, from coast to coast, there, again, who have said, what you have to do is move forward with the spending reduction plan. they want to see that. the ratings agencies want to see it. we can t continue on this trajectory. this president has spent $7.3 trillion.
