Why Robert Saleh will be a re-Pete (Carroll), not a repeat, for New York Jets

The former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator is a passionate, energetic coach who exudes positivity. He s a lot like one of his mentors, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who, ironically, was run off by the Jets 26 years ago because his style was deemed too player-friendly. For Pete s sake, the feel-good vibe is back with the Jets. And they need it. Man, do they need it. After five straight losing seasons, including a 2-14 stinker under Gase, they need a coach whose glass is half full. A coach who can galvanize the entire locker room, not just one side. A coach who can motivate and inspire.

Eagles coaching search has a whiz kids flare, from Jerod Mayo to Joe Brady

Taking on such a big job with so little experience is a tall order, especially in a tough market such as Philly, but targeting younger coaches is in line with the latest NFL trend. While the average age for the 32 NFL head coaches was 50 in 2020, five current coaches are in their 30s Brian Flores (39), Kevin Stefanski (38), Joe Judge (39), Zac Taylor (37) and the youngest of them all, Sean McVay (34) while Kliff Kingsbury (41) and Kyle Shanahan (41) are not far ahead. The youth movement is one of the reasons cited for why veteran coaches were reluctant to opt out this season amid the pandemic, fearing that if they got out of line, they might lose their spot permanently.

Arthur Smith brings optimism, but the Falcons will need patient approach

The Atlanta Falcons wanted a bright mind to revitalize their offense so they turned to Arthur Smith. The 38-year-old has been running one of the most balanced and successful offenses in the NFL as coordinator for the Tennessee Titans the past two seasons. Last year under Smith, who has been an assistant with the Titans since 2011, Tennessee ranked second in red zone touchdown scoring efficiency (75%), third in total yards per game (396.4) and fourth in scoring (30.7 points per game). Quarterback Ryan Tannehill made strides after he joined the Titans with Smith as his OC. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Tannehill s QBR jumped up over 24 points, his touchdown-to-interception ratio dramatically improved, and he recorded more yards per attempt. Receiver A.J. Brown had more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons.
