back for lent either. this is the problem. here s what happens. there s a natural national average $3.57. it s a nine month high based on all the things going on in the middle east and what not. when you see a gallon of gasoline in the bronx at $4.50. regular. very careful that these people on these corners aren t gouging. they hear the news story and they see what s going on and they start to jack up the price in the corner. there are anti-gouging laws. people actually see something like that send it in. they re not that far off. in california, the average is $4.03. i know. $4.03. california has a substantially higher tax structure that s higher in this area. new jersey is one of the lowest. the daily news looked into this particular station. the station overhead is $0.04 a gallon. the station profit is $0.02 a gallon. it s $0.67 in taxes. no, i there s no way in the world
prices are ticking up every single day elsewhere. fox business network s stu varney joins us with the forecast for the days and weeks ahead. stu, you ve been warning about this and boy, we ve seen such a jump just in the past days and weeks in many of our major u.s. cities. reporter: yes, there has an sudden surge in the price of gasoline and it is happening right now. give you a couple of examples: in cincinnati, the price of regular unleaded has gone up 17 cents a gallon in the past week. in los angeles, it is up 20 cents a gallon in one week. one week. that wencery are paying the highest price for gasoline ever, in the month of february. and in california, the average of all stations is now 4.03 for a gallon of regular unleaded. the moral of the story, megyn, is buy it today, because it is going to get more expensive tomorrow. look the a the price of oil, $105 a barrel today. that much higher price not yet filtering down to the front so buy it today,
we re seeing right now, $120 or something in europe, that won t hit the pump for a good 30 or 45 days so we re going to see gas prices rising for a long time. i think so. it looks like $4 as the national average is definitely on the horizon. it s already arrived in california. the average for all gas stations in california, regular unleaded is now $4.03 a gallon. here we come. we re heading to $4. sure, so we re heading to $4. let s give folks at home a little historical perspective. when barack obama was president of the united states for the first day, the gas at the pump there in washington, d.c. and across the country, the average was $1.84, fast forward to today, $3.52, as you can see. interesting, we were talking about this on friday, as you know, when the president was then senator running, he said of the high price when george bush was president, you know, if i m elected, we should have the department of justice investigate whether or not there s some collusion going on her
