Telecommunications company Telstra developed an SMS tool to let users check if their phone needs an upgrade as the telco's 3G network is scheduled.
Reliance Jio has recently suggested that the government should devise a policy to shut down legacy 2G and 3G networks to ensure that unnecessary network costs can be avoided, and all customers can be migrated to newer 4G and 5G networks. Vodafone Idea opposed such a move saying any such inorganic shutdown of 2G/3G networks through a regulatory mandate would impact financial inclusion of rural and marginal consumers who use feature-phones and also services offered through ATMs and PoS machines.
Brazilian regulator Anatel (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes) has confirmed that it plans to provide subsidies as an incentive to accelerate the transition from legacy 2G and 3G network architectures to 4G and 5G standards.
Oman is the latest country to announce plans to phase out 3G services. The country’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has said it will stop providing 3G mobile services gradually, starting from the third quarter of 2024.
