ALTON Applications are now available for the Josephine Marley Beckwith Future Leaders (JMBFL) Scholarship program.
This scholarship, first awarded in 1991, honors Beckwith’s achievements and dedication to education, eliminating racism and empowering women, all part of the mission of the YWCA. The YWCA Women of Distinction Academy members are the primary sources for these scholarships.
Beckwith holds many firsts in the Riverbend Area. She was the first employee of African descent at YWCA and the Olin-Matheson Corporation. She was the first president of the local National Council of Negro Women. She also was honored for her many efforts as a civil rights pioneer, educator, mentor and community organizer.
