On a liberal campus. We find out what thats like. Hello and welcome to 100 days. Im katty kay in washington, Christian Frasers in london. Britain is about to take another decisive step towards brexit. Yes, in the next hour, mps will be voting on a bill that will give the Prime Minister the power to trigger article 50 the formal notice to quit the European Union. This is the scene in the lower House Of Commons at the moment. I think the pm will be pretty pleased with the way it has gone. Theresa may has seen off a rebellion from her own mps, who were threatening to support an opposition amendment. So, when it comes to the final vote this evening, the vote to send it on its way to the lords, we expect the bill to go through largely unchanged. I have been speaking to the conservative Member Of Parliament anna soubry, who campaigned for the uk to remain in the eu. 48 of people in the uk voted to remain and so did a large number of mps and people watching, particularly those outside the cou
The lords have thrown the first spanner into the brexit works so carefully constructed by the Prime Minister, voting to amend the brexit bill to tie the governments hands by giving eu citizens here a guarantee of a right to remain. Now the plain truth is, there is little controversy over the substance the government wants the eu Residents Herejust as the lords do and the Leave Campaigners in the referendum did. The issue is about whether you negotiate their guarantee of residence in return for assurances over the rights of the british elsewhere. Or should we make the guarantee unilaterally . It was hard fought in the lords today. If we are to be concerned about anybodys rights after brexit, to live anywhere on this continent of europe, it should be our concern for the rights of british people to live freely and peacefully in those other parts of europe. Somehow or the other, today we seem to be thinking of nothing but the rights of foreigners. My lords. All our debate has been based on
Pragmatic, much more conciliatory, lots of language european values. Let me dust interrupted you, sorry to be so rude, but donald tusk is now speaking in brussels. Lets hear what he has got to say. For me. We would like to hear what he has got to say but we cannot hear him | he has got to say but we cannot hear him ithink he has got to say but we cannot hear him i think interrupting Laura Kuenssberg in full flight to listen toa Man Kuenssberg in full flight to listen to a man we cannot hear is unforgivable and i apologise there is the bold threat that no deal is better than a bad deal. What one senior mp was saying is the challenge for theresa may today is to seem resolute but also constructive, to be the iron fist in the velvet glove. I think the tone of this letter is very much velvet glove. We might now be able to hear donald tusk. This is the head of the Council Of Ministers in brussels. In essence, this is about damage control. Our goal is clear. To minimise the cost for the eu ci
From germanys die welt. Welcome to you all. Lets begin with britains exit from the European Union. Last summer, by a margin of 52 to a8, people here voted to leave. Theresa may wanted to stay in the eu, but now she has the task of negotiating notjust brexit, as its become known, but also a trade deal with europe. Since 1973, britains laws have absorbed growing quantities of regulations devised between the 28 member countries, on which a court in luxembourg has the final say. Those who want to stay argue this pooling of sovereignty has made it easier to trade and has created new protections in areas like employment or consumer rights. Supporters of brexit say its simply a case of taking back control. Michael gove, you were a supporter of brexit, a big advocate during last years campaign. On wednesday, the tone was sadness on all sides. By friday it had become steely. Michael gove, should we be preparing for a long and bloody war between the two sides before the deal is reached . I think
