some residents in northern california are returning home to piles of metal and rock after dozens of wildfires scorched their neighborhoods the past few days. at least 40 people have been killed in the fires since sunday. nearly 88,000 hectares, or 217,000 acres have burned throughout california. but crews are starting to get the fires under control. cnn s dan simon has the latest from kenwood, california. reporter: for the first time in a week, firefighters are now striking an optimistic tone about these fires. that s because the winds have died down, and with that, the containment numbers have gone up. that said, there still are some trouble spots. take look behind me. that s the oakmont fire you. can you see the smoke billowing there is some flame there on the mountain. but firefighters not too curbed because the fires are not burning towards any populated
calmer winds in northern california are helping firefighters battle dozens of wildfires. they broke out a week ago, and so far they have killed at least 14 people. unfortunately, that death toll might still increase as more than 200 others are currently missing. nearly 88,000 hectares, or 217,000 acres have burned throughout california. they re working on plans to get the thousands of evacuees back home, but some people have already returned home, only to find out they have lost everything. joining me now from california is zack block. zack, we know that you lost your home you. had to get out with your wife and your 11-month-old baby. how did it happen? had you been evacuated? or did you just have to flee? so we had to flee in a pretty quick manner. we woke up around 1:00 a.m. started to smell the smoke. and then it got pretty evident where the fire was showing in
it extended medicaid, so they ve got this insurance card that is worthless. i find myself loyal to the republican party. i voted against hillary clinton. i experienced eight years of the destruction of health care as i know it. we re in a situation where you have lawmakers working on this bill, and the president did go out on the campaign trail and say, i m not going to cut medicaid, your premiums aren t going to go up. drug prices are going to go down and everyone covered. promises have been made and americans have expectations. if you remove the mandate to buy insurance, a lot of things will happen. people will now use just their common sense and spend money where it needs to be spent. right now, the insurance companies get a set amount of n money, and they have no great interest in dribbling that out for patients. harvard did a study that based on this bill, 217,000 could die. when there s a headline like
some governors. i want to share a piece of research. harvard research did a study published by the center for american progress, and, yes, i know center for american progress has an agenda but harvard doesn t. if 23 million people lose their health care coverage, 217,000 additional deaths, those are deaths, will take place over the next decade. that being a number that they have to swallow, how does mitch mcconnell, who s extraordinarily skilled at this, get this thing over the line? well, that s the political pendulum swinging back in the other direction. republicans opposing obamacare and forcing democrats to own everything bad in the health care system as a result of it passing. i think it was senator manchin of west virginia, the democrat, who made the point a lot of his constituents, a lot of americans don t know what it was or who it was that helped them gain the coverage that they ve gotten over the last few years but he said they surely will know who took it away from them.
i have a letter from nevada legislature, directly from our majority leader of the state senate and our speaker of the assembly. and they re good questions. five questions. obviously, they want to get the same answers that all of us want here. we have a nevada 88,000 nevadans who have health insurance through the exchange. 77,000 nevadans eligible for federal tax credits. 217,000 nevadans that receive health care coverage under expansion. basic questions. mr. chairman, if i may, can i submit these questions to the record, on the record, and also if i may ask dr. price if he would respond to this particular letter, to these legislators. again, i think they re very good question. without objection. also if i may add f you could cc the governor also. i think the governor would also like answers to these questions. i think you re in a great position to answer these particular questions. thank you, sir. thank you.
