who s not paying their fair share, if we look at the last chart for a second and you see a total of federal and state, you see that wealthy people here over on the right, the top 1%, they get 21% of the total income in this country and they pay 21.6% of the total taxes in this country, federal, state and local. and as you go down, you ll see the numbers are close among income groups at the very bottom, yes. they have the bottom 20% has 3.4% of the income and they pay 2.1% of the taxes. but i think many of us would feel that s certainly more than fair proposition. i want to say though, steve, i think you would agree with me there s a good ideological argument to make. mitt romney obviously was very clumsy and negative about it. there s a good ideological argument to make as we move toward a time when more than half of americans aren t going to be paying federal income tax
there s no one really in the middle that s a mainline conservative that s well liked. when you look at the latest polls that just came out, the cbs, new york times poll. it has cain at 25%, romney 21%, gingrich 10%, paul 8%, perry down to 6%. now, the disturbing thing, if i m romney, is that lets look at romney s support since june. he in june at 24.9%, july, 22.3%, august, 18.9%, september, 21.6%. october, 24.9%. this guy can t catch fire. i mean, he s like just right there, can t go up, goes a little down. can t go up. how can this guy win when almost 80% of his party consistently wants somebody else? i say i think he d be in big trouble if there was somebody else or if there was a clear sort of consensus somebody
communities. we don t know that. so the question might be asked here, you know, why didn t the president stop in michigan which is certainly the worst off right now as he went through the midwest? well, for one, am not going to attempt to say what the president s schedule should be, but the real question is when you have a city like detroit that s 21.6% unemployment and the real numbers are around 50%, i think people in detroit are saying why is there not more attention being placed on those urban communities and why hasn t the president come through there, and that s what we heard over and over again from frustrated people, as you can see in that video that are citizens and in many cases some of whom have not worked for over three years. jeff johnson, thank you so much. next week tamron hall will anchor a newsnation live from the cbc jobs fair in miami on august 22nd and 23rd right here on msnbc. don t myth miss that. the fate of real housewives of beverly hills up in th
people that are already here, and there are over 70 companies here that have about 2,000 jobs available. so the cbc i think has increased what it is they were able to do in cleveland with numbers already. we know that in detroit the jobless rate is about 21.6%. the mayor and others are say the real numbers are around 50% unemployment. i think one of the things we re encouraged by here in detroit is when you look at the 2010 census, 24 to 35 years old graduates have increased in population by about 59%. and so it says that there are educated and skilled folks here prepared to work. i think it s about doing what the cbc is doing, which is engaging employers to be able to find the jobs and connect them with the people who are skilled for them. is it the case that if people are going to be there, they actually have to have jobs to offer? well, i think the point is,
it s an optimistic forecast. who know fist they are right, but i will take that for today. what s going to be driving the economy. home sales might be back for a while. some people have been saying until the housing market kicks back up, you are not going to see the economy and doing it independently of housing that s a key point. housing and things linked to housing and construction and home improvement were up to 20% of our economy. now we are at a fraction of that. maybe the home is the most significant asset, if it came along, we would be growing we do it without housing. note this. we re in a 21.6% gain. washing machines and driers and things that last more than three years that. is the fastest rate since the quarter after the september 11 attacks.
