It was on this day last year, the discussion in the evening editorial meeting here at TNIE Bhubaneswar veered towards a mysterious virus spreading in the Hubei province of China and causing a number of people to fall sick with severe pneumonia. The talk moved to the possibility of a developing contagion and moving out of China to even land in our soil. Most of us scotched the contention, reeling out examples of SARS, MERS, Ebola – how they did not spread to India and how the only pandemic in our recent memory, Swine Flu of 2009, was dealt with and eventually mellowed into a seasonal flu.

The year has almost drawn to an end and when we look back now, what s the one thing we did the most? I think we can all unanimously say that we binge-watched films and shows! Stationed at home for months on end, most of us discovered the movie buffs and chefs in us. Binge-watching became as important as social distancing because karne ko aur tha bhi kya?
The first part of the year saw many Bollywood releases that left us impressed including Chhaapak, Thappad and Panga. But, as the next few months arrived, we received some not-so-great to absolutely abysmal films including Love Aaj Kal, Sadak 2 and more.

The Lockdown
With Covid came the lockdown. All educational institutions were closed down from last week of March and higher educational institutions reopening only for final year students and research scholars in December. While staying indoors had its perks, the poor found it difficult to educated their children.
Students, particularly from government schools and small low-cost private schools were left to the whim of one-way lectures broadcasted on Kalvi TV, where they neither got literacy training nor a chance to clarify doubts.
