and unrelenting debate since the day it was written. a work of writing that s been quoted and misquoted for generations. a work of writing that has been challenged for removal, not by florida or texas, but by a former united states president. a work of writing that once beautiful, and yet the most weaponized in our nation s history. a work of writing that proves how powerful words can be. today, we re talking about the united states constitution. penned in 1787, in the same pennsylvania building in which the declaration of independence was written. the united states constitution lays out the framework and constraints for our form of government. the bill of rights was then ratified in 1791, a document created after some signatories voiced the need for a clear description of individual rights. since then, more than 10,000 amendments to the constitution have been introduced in congress. just 27 have received the necessary approvals to be ratified, including such
ex-president, presumably, assuming he s found guilty of this, returning to the scene of his crime. i mean, it s such an american tale here. he s being brought to washington in the vicinity of the capitol where this insurrection took place near the white house where he planned this plot against america to steal our democracy and a jury of 12 ordinary, and no american citizen is ordinary, but 12 american citizens, which is the highest title we have in this country, not president, not chief justice. they will meet to decide his fate. if the founders came back from 1787 and they saw this happening, what better tableau that demonstrates the fact that no human being in this country should be above the law. right. no man is above the law. general psaki, donald trump faces 78 counts across three
thing you can imagine. i mean, here s a former president who attempted to subvert the constitution that he was sworn to protect. maybe that sounds sentimental to some people, but if we don t have an allegiance, not only to the substance of law but to its spirit, then we don t have a functioning constitutional republic. full stop. i don t believe any person is above the law. that s a central incite about the broad western tradition that really, in many ways, found its fullest manifestation, however imperfectly, in 1776 and 1787. was much more fully ralized in the aftermath of the civil war and the reconstruction amendments, to try to make equality before the law a real
