representative mike rogers of alabama, watchlist, was about to happen, he approaches a group, shouting at gates, he has to be physically held back and lead away. just minutes after that tense confrontation, gates approached mccarthy on the floor, and they appeared to strike a deal. then, shortly after midnight, mccarthy received enough votes to become the speaker he was sworn into his new position after one a.m. and so it was the rest of the 118th congress. mccarthy was elected with 216 votes, enough to win him the speakers gavel on the 15th try. the last day of mccarthy speaker stillbirth so go up abused the backdrop of the second anniversary of the january six insurrection. and noticeably, there lost six republican holdouts who voted present, allowing mccarthy to win, where supporters of donald trump s big baseless lie about election fraud that ultimately led to the violent attack on the capitol two years ago. with the exception of the freshman congressman, eli crane, the other five
but then when you actually see a member of congress lunging for another, that s a whole different matter. what is at the root of that? reporter: yeah. you know, it appeared that mike rogers of alabama apparently reached his boiling point and got really frustrated. this was during the 14th vote when he lunged at matt gaetz. matt gaetz was in the position where he was the only person left, and he voted present, and mccarthy could not secure the victory as expected during the 14th vote. ultimately mccarthy was successful during the 15th try, but that really i think finished the deep divisions within the republican conference. a vast majority of republicans supported mccarthy from the outset, but they all had to be in it to win it essentially together throughout this week. all right. eva mckenld, so much more to watch, we know. thank you. all right. earlier today i spoke with a
capitol hill. eva, what finally pushed mccarthy over the edge for these republican holdouts? reporter: well, he was able to convince those never-kevin lawmakers ultimately vote present and that is how he secured this victory on the 15th try, fred, but also by making some key concessions. so, for instance, those hard lines republicans, they ll have the opportunity to serve on the house rules committee. that is a powerful committee. as well as also a lot of votes on issues that are important to conservatives and then also key having 72 hours to read a bill and that actually is something that rank-and-file members on both sides of the aisle lament that there is not enough time to actually read legislation of consequence before they vote on them. you know, a thorn on his side throughout this process was florida congressman matt gaetz. a little bit of drama during the 14th vote when he voted present
