typhoons. the name doesn t really matter. this was the equivalent fredricka, of a category 5 hurricane. and i must tell you as we zoom in closer here and show you the latest the death toll remains in the single digits. i would be very happy, but i would be shocked. i think this has the potential to go into the hundreds if not more. there are going to be villages here that are probably going to have been obliterated by the storm, just because of the structures that they live in. they just can barely sustain a tropical storm or category 1 hurricane. not this. this was a category 5 storm that rolled through here the strongest storm to ever hit vanuatu, the island chain to the north of new californiaedonia here. 150-mile-an-hour winds, still the current wind speed at the core of the storm but continues to move south and east and weakening here. so the worst is over. so at this point, it s a matter of getting the help those people are going to be in desperate need of the next several days e
japanese island of okinawa. with 150-mile-an-hour winds. it s the strongest storm to hit japan in years. and it s having a major impact on u.s. military operations. here is abc s david kerley. reporter: already heavy surf and rain are hitting okinawa. this enormous typhoon could be one of the strongest storms to hit japan in decades. and in the path, 52,000 americans, service members and their families, on the island of okinawa. this 700-mile wide storm, typhoon neoguri, is still packing winds of 125 miles an hour. that s the equivalent of a category 3 hurricane in the u.s. japanese weather officials have issued their highest warning. worried about storm surge and possibility of severe flooding. and the u.s. military heeded the warnings. over the past 24 hours it started flying out aircraft. c-130 transports, sub hunters, as well as the refueling
this is this reef shreveport, l. nebraska, iowa, right on the border of kansas city and missouri. this line here, this was the main event as we went through this evening. last night, that was. it was one super cell thunderstorm that produced all of this tornado damage. one storm. a very strong storm that produced it appears about a 2 1/2 hour tornado. a large wedge tornado. that s the tornado that goes all the way to the ground. the damage i ve seen so far, i d say probably about an ef-3 or greater. 150-mile-an-hour winds plus and that damage path was 100 miles long. there s a lot of small towns, little houses out in the rural areas we haven t seen yet because we haven t gotten helicopters over the area.
